Avalon School of English will be closing on Friday 18th December 2009 and re-opening on January 4th 2010. Please ask reception if you have any questions regarding your course or if you wish to study at this time.

Fireworks and Military Flypast at the Lord Mayor Show

On Saturday 14 November, following in the footsteps of his predecessors, the 682nd Lord Mayor of London’s first duty will be to embark on a procession from Mansion House to St Paul’s Cathedral as part of the Lord Mayor’s Show. The procession will begin at 11.00am at the Mansion House following a military flypast.

At 5.00pm the Lord Mayor will light the touch paper to the spectacular Lord Mayor’s Fireworks display on the river Thames, between Blackfriars Bridge and Waterloo Bridge. Check out http://www.lordmayorsshow.org for more information.

Party in Central London With The Regent Street Festival!

The Regent Street Festival is back for its 10th year, and promises to be bigger than ever!

This year the Regent Street Festival celebrates its 10th anniversary with a birthday themed festival, with live entertainment, music, dance, food and drinks and a lot more. Additionally, one of London's best-loved bands, Madness, are performing an exclusive gig on the day – the first time the street has been closed for a concert.

Skyride Gives Freedom of The City to Thousands of Cyclists in London

Sunday 20th September will see what is expected to be London’s biggest ever mass participation cycle day.The 15km route takes in some of London's most well-known landmarks as it travels down Victoria Embankment by the River Thames. The ride starts and finishes on The Mall. All of the roads used will be closed to traffic from 10am to 4pm on the day of the ride.

As well as the ride itself, entertainment will be laid on in St James' Park, so even if you are not riding there's plenty to keep you busy. Entry to the ride and entertainment is completely free - just turn up and enjoy yourself.

London Parties at the Notting Hill Carnival

Londoner's at the Notting Hill Carnival enjoyed sunny and warm weather yesterday as Europe's biggest street carnival finished in a typical blaze of colour.

Up to 500,000 people have descended on West London to travel the annual event's 3.5mile route while enjoying the jerk-chicken food stalls , steel-pan bands and watching exotic dancers and floats.

London Falls 20 Places in Most Expensive World Cities

London has fallen from the second most expensive city in the world to 22nd, according to research by investment bank UBS. Oslo is now the world’s most expensive city, followed by Zurich, Copenhagen, Geneva, Tokyo and New York, the study found.

Big Ben on ice created in London

The London monument is being assembled in the capital's Covent Garden piazza as part of a scaled-down reconstruction of the city's skyline, also featuring Canary Wharf, Big Ben, Tower Bridge, The London Eye, St Paul's Cathedral and the Gherkin.

The creation, measuring 10m in length and 3m in height, was being put together by some of the world's top ice sculptors who worked through the night to carve structures using a mixture of clear and white ice.

Oyster Card 30% Discount Available From 1st September

If you are a long-term Avalon student you can take advantage of a 30% discount on your purchases of Oyster travel cards. As long as you have booked for a course for over 14 weeks or over (for at least 15 hours a week) you are eligible to apply for the discount.

What is an Oyster card?

The Oyster card is a way of paying cheaply for journeys around London without having to hand over cash. The fares on an Oyster card are cheaper than those purchased elsewhere.

Where can I use an Oyster card?

Oyster cards can be used on Buses, London Underground and season travelcards can be used on National Rail services within the London area.

£10 Rail Fares on South West Trains

This August at weekends you have a chance to travel throughout the South West Trains network for just £10 day return.

Tickets are available on Saturday 1, 8, 15, and 22 August and Sunday 2, 9, 16 and 23 August. Midsummer Madness tickets are available on the day of travel from any staffed South West Trains station. Full details are available here.
