Which English books should I read to practise my reading?
Reading English books is a fun way to learn English and improve your vocabulary.
Here at Avalon School, we want to recommend a few English books that you can use to practise your English.
We selected these books because they are easy to understand and can help you improve your English grammar and your vocabulary.
“The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde”
This is a horror story by the Scottish author Robert Louis Stevenson, first published in 1886.
It’s about a London lawyer who starts to investigate strange things that begin to happen between his old friend, Dr. Henry Jekyll, and the evil Mr. Edward Hyde.
It’s a thriller, and is impossible to stop reading it once you start. It is a very well written book and so can help you improve your English!
This is a short novel by Brazilian author Paulo Coehlo, first published in 1988. It was first published in Portuguese but was later translated and became an international bestseller.
It tells the story of a young Andalusian shepherd who has a strange repeating dream. A fortune teller tells him that the dream means that he will find treasure in the pyramids of Egypt. The boy decides to travel to Egypt to find this treasure, and his destiny.
Don’t be afraid to dive into this magical book. It might also inspire you!
This book is especially useful if you want to practise the past perfect tense. Also, it’s not too long and it’s easy to read.
This book is a romance for young adults by Stephenie Meyer. It has become more famous thanks to the Twilight series movies.
It tells about a girl, Bella Swan, who moves from Arizona to Washington State to live with her father. At school, Bella meets a boy, Edward, who is actually a Vampire. They fall in love but, as you can guess, things get much more complicated!
This modern romance is fun to read, and the English is simple to understand.
“The Little Prince”
This novella was first published 1943 by pioneering author Antoine De Saint-Exupery. It is one of the most translated books in the world and has been voted the best book of the 20th century in many countries.
The book tells the story of a pilot that crashes his plane in the Sahara. Here he meets a young boy, “The Little Prince”.
The novella teaches the secret of life in the form of a fable, and has forever changed the world for its many million readers.
This easy-to-read English book is not only useful for English practice, but it also gives good advice for life in general.
