Getting Around London

Avalon School

Getting around London can seem a bit daunting to begin with but we have access to a whole host of fantastic public transport links! We’ve included them here with a guide on prices and how to buy tickets.

1. Oyster Cards

London Oyster Card

One cannot say London transport without mentioning the Oyster card. It is a plastic smartcard which can hold pay as you go credit and Travelcards. People can use an Oyster card on almost every mode of transport in London including  London underground, overground , DLR, and buses. Surprisingly, you can also use an Oyster card for Emirates Air Line cable car, River Bus services and most National Rail services in London. The best thing about an Oyster card is that you can plan your journey and choose the most suitable options for you. If you are aged over 18, you may be eligible for discounted travel.

Store credit to pay as you go

Although you make a lot of journeys within one day and you don’t use a travelcard, you don’t need to worry about spending a huge amount of money on transport. Capping, a feature of pay as you go, limits the amount you pay for your travel. Once the total cost of all your fares reaches a certain amount you won’t have to pay for any more journeys for the rest of the day. The caps are different according to zones you travel through and time (off-peak). You can check the fare prices and caps on the TFL website: https://tfl.gov.uk/fares-and-payments/fares

Add Travelcards if you make a lot of journeys through a whole specific period.

You can buy Travelcards on Oyster to travel on tubes across Zones 1-9. You can decide which zones you want to travel through and until which date the travel card will be valid. According to this, different fares are applied.  Travelcards can be used on all buses with the London transport sign, or you can select a ‘bus only travel card’, which is much cheaper.

2. Night Tube and Bus.

The Night Tube operates every Friday and Saturday, and is charged at off-peak rate.

However, it is recommended that you check which areas night tube runs as there might be no service between some areas.

3. Cycles

You can hire Santander Cycles simply by going to any docking station with your bank card. You can hire a bike from as little as £2. No booking is needed. Just hire a bike and return it to any docking station after your ride. Membership by mobile app is also available to enable you to access bikes faster and cost effectively.

London Santander Bikes

– Yearly access to the bikes : £90

– Pay as you go : £2 for 24 hour access + extra
ride charges for journeys over 30 minutes.
