Watching movie in English

Here at Avalon School we always recommend watching movies in English.

Why should you watch movies in English to learn the language? Because it’s one of the best ways to improve your English conversation. You can learn English and have a great time.

What are the benefits of watching movies in English? Well, there are many positive benefits. Let me explain:

  • YOU LEARN NATURAL ENGLISH

Watching movies in English allows you to learn real English in real situations. You can learn many new ways to say something and express yourself in daily life. Not only pronunciation, but body language is also very important.

  • THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN ‘MOVIE’ AND ‘FILM’

Many British English speakers don’t use the word ‘movie’ but prefer the word ‘film’. The word ‘movie’ is from American English, but it is becoming very common in British English. You can use ‘movie’ when speaking about entertaining films like action films and science fiction films. For example, you can say ‘action movie’ and ‘sci-fi movie’. However, you should never use the word ‘movie’ when speaking about very serious films!

  • USE WORDS IN THE RIGHT CONTEXT

The great thing about watching movies in English is that you can learn exactly when you should use a particular word. You can see in which situation or context you can use it.

A good example is ‘get’. ‘Get’ has more than 200 meanings, so understanding exactly how people use it in real life will help you in everyday conversations.

  • YOU CAN IMPROVE YOUR LISTENING

When having a conversation in English, it’s often difficult to understand what people are saying when they speak fast. This is because not all sounds are pronounced in natural speech. So watching movies in English can help you to understand English speakers better.

  • IMPROVE YOUR VOCABULARY

Watching movies in English helps you learn new words and improve your vocabulary. This includes natural English such as slang, idioms and colloquial expressions. These are difficult to learn from course-books. Hearing new words or expressions, and understanding them in context, will allow you to use them correctly in your conversation.

Here are some more useful tips you should know before watching a movie in English:

  • USE SUBTITLES

If you’re not really familiar with the subject of the film, you should use the subtitles in English. Getting good at listening takes a bit of time, so be patient.

The subtitles help you to follow the conversations better so you don’t miss any words. When you feel more confident with your listening you can watch the same movie again without subtitles.

  • IF YOU DON’T UNDERSTAND EVERY WORD, DON’T WORRY!

A good practice that our teachers always recommend is not to focus too much on single words. Let me explain. If you don’t understand every word in a sentence, it doesn’t really matter. The important thing is that you understand the general meaning of what the actors are saying.

  • MAKE NOTES

When you are watching a film and you hear a word that you don’t understand, don’t stop the film to translate it! Stopping the movie will mean that you won’t enjoy it as much. Remember the point above: IF YOU DON’T UNDERSTAND EVERY WORD, DON’T WORRY!

Instead, make a note of the word you think is important. After you have finished watching, you can then look it up and find the translation. This is a really good way to learn new vocabulary and have fun at the same time.
