Each English teaching option is listed with details about the duration of the course, course content, the objectives or aims of the course and what materials are provided with the course. We have indicated at what time of the day the course is available, with the following categories:

Mor: Morning start from 9.30am

Aft: Afternoon start from 1.30pm

Eve: Evening start from 6.30pm

English For Life

An interesting, effective course for beginners designed to practise all skills; reading, writing, listening and speaking. 50 minutes
The course is split into 4 levels and takes complete beginners to intermediate level in 12 weeks.
Grammar exercises are brought alive in the classroom with speaking activities and useful writing activities. The course includes a focus on pronunciation by introducing phonemes, and the sounds and features of natural speech.
By the end of the course students know all tenses, have a wide range of vocabulary and can read and write at intermediate level.

When can I start?
You can start at any time. You will be tested on arrival at Avalon and put into a suitable class (EFL 1, 2, 3 or 4). Each level takes 4 weeks to complete.

Will I get a certificate?

Yes, if you complete the course you will get an Avalon Intermediate Certificate.

Quantum English (dynamic speaking classes)

Quantum English

A carefully devised speaking course which introduces new vocabulary and grammar whilst using previously studied material in revision sections. All speaking classes are 2 x 50 minute (with a 10 minute break between). 2 x 50 minutes
The first class revises previously learnt words and grammar and the second hour presents new material. Teachers give full correction and there is a focus on word order and pronunciation.




Students gain confidence quickly because they are placed in small classes with other students at the same level. The teacher encourages students to ask and answer questions using new vocabulary and teachers give full correction so that students can learn from their mistakes.

When can I start?
You can start at any time.

Will I get a certificate?

Yes, you will get an Avalon certificate showing the level you completed. There are regular tests and progress assessments to ensure that students are at the right level.

Vocabulary Builder

Vocabulary Builder

This course is for students who wish to build their vocabulary fast and in a natural context. 50 minutes
The course covers topics such as; the human body, emotions, giving directions, prepositions of place, tenses, the natural environment, the home and academic vocabulary.
To increase the vocabulary of elementary and pre-intermediate students in a fun, lively class.
Teachers use a variety of materials. Students do not have to buy a book.

Grammar Express 1

Many students come to Avalon to improve their speaking, but the school also offers specialist grammar classes at all levels. It is one of the modules which students can choose to do at any time during their course.

Teachers choose units from one of the most popular grammar books on the market, and work through useful grammar practice exercises, whilst providing clear explanations and additional material when required.


To focus on improving students’ grammar at elementary level.

Pronunciation 1 & 2

Would you like to improve your pronunciation in a specialist 50 minute class?
50 minutes
On this course, students learn to identify sounds and their corresponding phonemes. They practise word and sentence stress and do exercises to improve their intonation. Much of the course involves listening to CDs and repeating sounds and sentences. - Level 1 lasts 4 weeks and introduces students to the IPA phonemic symbols. - Level 2 lasts 4 weeks and practices stress and intonation.
To help students’ listening and speaking through training in key areas of pronunciation. These key areas include the production of individual sounds, words and sentence stress, and intonation.
The teacher uses several course books including; New Headway Pronunciation and English Pronunciation in Use. Students do not need to buy a book

The teacher follows a syllabus of interesting topics which are introduced through a reading or listening exercise. Students learn vocabulary related to that subject and discuss in pairs, small groups and as a whole class.
To build students’ confidence and encourage them to use their knowledge of English in free practice activities and natural conversation.
The teacher uses several sources for materials. Students do not need to buy a book.

British Culture

An upper-intermediate level reading & discussion class.

Would you like to know more about London and British people? What kind of food do they like? How influential is the British media? What do they find funny? What is their attitude towards social problems? An interesting class to engage students in finding out more about the people behind the language.
The teacher uses several sources for materials, including DVDs, newspapers and magazines. Students do not need to buy a book.

When can I start?
Any Monday. But the course is 4 weeks duration – so we recommend starting at the beginning

Film Studies

Film Studies

An upper-intermediate discussion class using film as a basis for ideas and listening exercises.
50 minutes
Students watch film clips for around 20 minutes and answer questions and exercises based on the film.
Films are popular around the world and this class is designed to motivate students to use their English in a natural way on everyday subjects.
