Frequently Asked Questions
For full details of the Accommodation types that Avalon School can provide for our students studying English in London please see the main accommodation page. This page contains answers to the most common questions that we get asked:
Yes, you can arrive at your accommodation any day.
For exam preparation courses and Business English it is best to start on a Monday.
Please advise us of your flight number and flight time so that someone can be at the accommodation to welcome you.
The £50 accommodation booking fee is non-refundable for all bookings.
Student Residences don’t refund deposits. Student Residence zone 2 does not refund fees within 3 months of the arrival date. Please book carefully.
Homestay bookings can be cancelled with no penalties if you advise the school not less than 2 weeks before arrival. The £50 accommodation booking fee is non-refundable for all bookings.
Student Shared Houses can be cancelled without penalties if cancelled at least 28 days before arrival. If cancelled 27-08 days before arrival, one week will be charged. Cancellations received 07-01 days before arrival will be charged 2 weeks’ fees.
You can pay a deposit to secure the room but your booking is not confirmed until all payment is received. If you are applying for a visa then you can pay a deposit for the course and a deposit for the accommodation. This will be written on your enrolment letter (or on the CAS for Tier 4 students).
For transport purposes, London is divided into zones. The central area, where most tourist attractions are located, is called zone 1. Avalon School is in zone 1. There isn’t much residential accommodation in the centre as this is the most expensive part of the city. Zone 2 is outside zone 1 and there is a lot of residential accommodation and good transport links by tube and bus. Zones 3 and 4 are also residential and generally have more green space and larger homes than zone 2. Students travelling to school from zones 3 or 4 may take a train, which is faster, but slightly more expensive than a bus or tube.
Check out the official London Transport website for maps and ticket information.
Once you have paid in full you will receive the address, a map, directions from the airport, a contact telephone number and other useful information. For homestay we send this about 2 weeks before arrival date.
The Student Residence in zone 2 has free wi-fi. The Student Residence in zone 3 doesn’t have wi-fi. All Student Shared Houses have free wi-fi. Some homestay accommodation has free wi-fi or dialup internet connections but please request this at the time of booking.
At homestays you can do your own washing. One load of whites and one load of darks per week is considered reasonable. More than this and the homestay host may charge extra. At Student Residence zone 2 there is a free laundry room. There is a washing machine in each Shared Student House.
Not in a homestay or a student residence but we can match you with another student in a twin room at Student Shared Houses.
We choose our accommodation carefully and trust that you will be happy. But sometimes students have different expectations and of course you can give the required notice period and move to other accommodation. We recommend that you book a short period initially and then you can extend the same place, if available, or look for a new place.
If you have any complaints about your accommodation please inform Avalon’s Accommodation Officer immediately.
If you are not satisfied and wish to take your complaint further you can write to the British Council at:
